Bicycle Generator

DIY guide to converting a bicycle into a power source

Electronics, Spring 2013, Teammate: Jonathan Wong

Concept

We wanted to create a bicycle charging station to put at our campus's farm. The station would be both practical, as there was no nearby electricity, and educational as students would feel how much energy their devices use. In addition to testing the traditional bicycle tred-to-dynamo setup, we coupled the chain directly to the motor to increase the energy transfer efficiency.

Role

I developed and pitched the bike generator idea to our professor. I adjusted the chain lengths, machined the base plate for alternator, and analyzed the specifications for the alternator-to-battery connection.
